Living In An Instant World
For those of you who are old enough to remember, vinyl records were the traditional way of listening to music from the comfort of your own home. Listening to that one perfect song meant visiting a record shop and searching through the records one by one. Then times changed. Records turned into cassettes, and then into CDs. Before long, the record collection of your dreams was available at your fingertips. The reason I bring this up, is because we are living in a world where everything is becoming instant. Tinder, Uber, Snapchat, fast food, fast.. well, everything! But no fast jobs? No quick and easy way of making money? Let’s take a closer look at the current application process.
Imagine you’re the owner of a pub. You’re looking to fill a part-time position pulling pints and serving customers. How would you go about it? Would you post an ad in the newspaper? Or would you post an ad online, maybe on a university website? You might even post it on your own website? Whichever method you prefer, there is one thing that, unfortunately, has never changed. And that’s CVs. How much time and effort does the prospective employer spend evaluating CVs? How long do employers spend trying to find the perfect candidate, only to set up an interview and realise that the candidate may or may not have altered a grade or two, or bulked up some of their “responsibilities” from a previous job. A lot, right?
Let’s look at the other perspective. How much time and effort do students put in to carefully crafting a CV, only to be put at the bottom of the pile, time and time again? Again, a lot! No matter how much experience they have, they’re unsuccessful. Simply because the job they applied for, had too many CVs to look through.
